Technical Efficiency Analysis of Layer and Broiler Poultry Farmers in Pakistan

Achieving high production with limited resources is a major challenge faced by poultry farmers in countries developing economies, such as Pakistan. Optimization of the technical efficiency (TE) business operations promising strategy. A representative sample 210 farms province Punjab Pakistan was analyzed for TE. The studied comprised 105 layer chicken (battery cage system, egg production) and broiler (environmental control shed meat production). Cobb–Douglas stochastic frontier analysis approach inefficiency effect model used to simultaneously estimate TE levels identify factors that influence efficiency. results indicated flock size, labor, feed, water consumption are positively related production, whereas vaccination found be insignificant. For businesses, were output, labor revealed farmer age, education, experience, access credit, extension services all had significant positive on both farmers. estimated mean level 89% 92%, respectively, evaluated against benchmark identified efficient prevailing systems. study concludes it possible increase 11% 8% making more use available technology.
